reason #73 why i'm a nerd

all i've wanted to do these last weeks of summer is read Anna Karenina, listen to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and play Lego Harry Potter on wii. oh, and drink lots of this:

i have three days left of working as a nanny and then i'm only going to be tutoring until i graduate. its kind of crazy, i've been a nanny for the same family for over 3 years [4 summers!] and its going to feel weird not taking care of the kids anymore. but i know when its time to move on, and it will be nice to have my life back...my schedule has been dictated by another family and their needs for the entire time i've been at university.
back to school season is one of my favorite times of year. its so much fun finding new school supplies and clothes, and its the start of fall! thank goodness. here's to hoping that the weather here in Texas will cool down a bit! just thinking of walking the couple of miles to class everyday in the heat is daunting.
blogspot is being lame and not letting me upload my France pictures. fingers crossed my skills will manage to find a way ^.^

liebe: Bensimon shoes

due to the sheer number of pictures taken in France (800+), any posts about my trip are definitely going to have to wait!
i admit, one of the first things that i look at when i'm people watching are the shoes that they're wearing. and in France, i saw so many girls wearing Bensimon shoes! They're basically the French version of Converse, and i really wanted a pair. despite looking for them in stores, i wasn't able to find my size [besides being substantially shorter than me, apparently French people also have tinier feet.] i came back home, thinking that they just weren't meant for me.
fast forward to yesterday. i stopped in at Madewell, and they had Bensimon shoes! in my size! in a Liberty print! basically they were the best combo of French and British influences, and i was in love. i am definitely a champion for flat shoes, heels are so bad for your feet!! plus when you're walking over a mile to class everyday, you need to aim for comfort.

successful shoe shopping trips are always fun. besides the Bensimons, i had to pick up a new set of TOMS...i love the fact that they donate a pair of shoes to a needy child for each pair that they sell...as well as being the most comfortable shoes in the universe!
i'm coming to terms with the fact that its ok that i love shopping. for me, its not about greed or trying to compensate for something else, its more about the quest to find items to edit my environment with, to be constantly surrounded by things that spark my creativity and make me happy.

obsessive consumption

we are not the sum of our material possessions. although i completely believe in this statement, at the same time, i am a collector of things...books, vinyl records, CLOTHES, jewelry, cameras, magazines...the list goes on and on. however, i do not think that i have these things for the sake of having them. this book, Obsessive Consumption is a compendium of Kate Bingaman-Burt's purchases over the course of several years. I looked through it the last time i was in Barnes and Noble and thought that it was groundbreaking--are we simply our belongings? can a person be judged on what is in their shopping cart?

so many people follow these complete extremes--either being attached to objects is selfish and unnecessary, or an obsession with things is exaggerated.
i enjoy surrounding myself with beautiful objects that inspire me and reflect who i am as a person. while clothes and fashion can appear shallow at best, how i dress is a daily creative outlet--a vehicle for me to express myself and my personal aesthetic. the same goes for my collections--i like the ongoing hunt to add to my collections, and experience joy when a record i've been searching for or a novel i've wanted is found. silly? probably. but manifesting something you like is always a blessing, in my eyes.
it does make me a little sad when people feel a need to have things merely for the sake of having them--or being able to brag about them on Facebook. i do not think that you should purchase any article of clothing, or accessory, or newest Apple product just to be able to say that you own it. in all reality, who cares? it really doesn't matter if you've acquired the newest designer purse or iPhone...it does not make you a better, kinder person, and boasting about it via the Internet...just trashy. this is not to claim that you cannot speak about the good things in your life without sounding rude and bragadocious, but to say things in a manner where you are trying to instigate jealously has been more and more common online, and i sincerely hope that i never come across this way, as it is not my intention.
i'm aware that this is essentially a rant, but i am not speaking about against materialism or anything of that nature. things should be purchased out of their own merit because they bring your personal happiness, not based on who is going to be envious of your owning it. i just think that material possessions do not alter the person you are in the inside--they are accoutrements, not your identity.

30.6.10

july, july!

i've been looking forward to july 2010 for a long while. my much-awaited journey to France and Monaco is finally almost here! June was kind of an odd month--the days seemed to go by quickly, but it feels like June lasted much longer than it should have. Strange.
I do have some goals for the beginning of a new month!
-Read all of Jane Austen's wonderful novels. She is one of my favorite authors, and i haven't had the pleasure of rereading them for fun in years. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite [how typical!]--most likely because of Elizabeth Bennet's biting wit and Mr. Darcy ^_^
-Eat more fruits and veggies--i've even found some great recipes for green smoothies, so now i can make my own instead of buying them from Whole Foods!
-Keep practicing my guitar
-Dust off my sewing machine and make something
-a possible trip down to Austin, TX
This is still one of my favorite movies:

it reminds me of Salinger's novel Franny and Zooey so much. love.
and i cannot wait for this one to come out!

i love kids' movies like this. I saw Toy Story 3 last week and it was amazing. It was very poignant, bringing up issues of abandonment, the process of growing old, and loyalty. and yes, i admit that it made me shed a few tears. i completely recommend it!

young adult fiction, i love you

Usually, when someone mentions young adult fiction, visions of trashy Gossip Girl books and "vampire romance" delusions come to mind. It seems like the common consensus is that young adult fiction cannot be classified as legitimate literature. I took a class on the topic last semester, and although some of the book choices (like Forever--shudder) did nothing to end the stereotype, other novels I've found recently, like Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins have not only been page-turners, but also contained aspects that warranted actual literary merit.

[does anyone else see the resemblance of this cover to Ann Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged? Anyone?]
these novels hold classical archetypes--the hero archetype, the epic conventions, the theme of good versus evil, with good triumphant. The Hunger Games and the Percy Jackson and the Olympian series embody age-old themes and motifs--almost as a modernized and more relatable Iliad or Odyssey. Besides exposing teenagers to Classical ideas, they put them in an interesting format. To sum it up, I feel that the young adult fiction world is taking a turn for the better, and giving young adults more credit--why fill their heads with catty girls spreading rumors or forbidden love with werewolves when they can learn about Greek gods and 1984-esque distopias?
[disclaimer-i realize that this blog exposes me for the English major nerd I am. But ever since the 12 year old I babysit recommended these books I've had this running through my head!]

Samstag Lieblings

This week's inspirations and a few of my favorite things:
-delicate gold jewelry
-Ancient Literature [currently rereading The Aeneid by Virgil--its beautifully written and even more enjoyable when its not for a class assignment]
-La Duni's amazing iced cappuccinos and pastries--the nutella cupcakes and pistachio cookies are so good.

-Madewell's slim slouch jeans [boyfriend jeans are a nice change from the skinny jeans i've worn for 5 years]

-Cute hats--the perfect solution to bad hair days
-Paper Source. every single time i go there i leave with the most unexpected treasures--a vintage looking London poster, a paper flag craft kit--basically everything i never knew i needed until i saw it there!
-collections. i love the never-ending search to expand my antique camera, vinyl record, and book collections!
-oxford shoes

2.6.10

wise men never fall in love, so how are they to know?

the Disney cruise was just what i needed post-finals--laying out on a Caribbean beach, jet skiing, and playing with dolphins. i feel so blessed that i got to go!! I admit, I love anything and everything Disney related [and I'm determined to have my wedding in Disney World. It will happen!]

Between working two jobs this summer, I have a few goals I really want to accomplish:
-Read every single day. [work on the self-assigned book list!]
-Perfect "Comptine d'Un Autre Été" on the piano. Also, bonus points for practicing guitar!
-Practice German on a daily basis so that I'm prepared for German 3 in the fall
-Take more pictures and learn more about photography
-Yoga every day + healthy eating
-Keeping better track of inspiring quotes that I come across
-Only purchasing things that I absolutely love. No settling!

17.5.10

i want to be where your heart is home

i am a firm believer in the power of organization. this may sound silly [and possibly trite] but i truly think that cleaning and organizing your living space can help you to sort things out in your head--a way of the tangible assisting the intangible. plus, whenever i have a break from school, i like reorganizing my tiny room and rediscovering old belongings. the only downside is that through all this cleaning is that i've realized the sheer number of books that i own, and that i really do not have much room left for any more!! my space is packed with bookshelves and they're crammed full, almost to the breaking point. yikes!
basically, i think that your living space is a reflection of your inner self, and a clean room shows a happy, positive mental state...something definitely to aspire to!

some things that ich liebe on the first week of summer break:

camera collections;

i finally jumped on the bandwagon and purchased this bestseller. can't wait to read it! [and very grateful that i have free time to read novels of my own choosing instead of just class assignments]

yummy sushi--as always

bangs [+teeny pink ukuleles!]

15.5.10

sheesh i'm a SENIOR?!

well, finals week and all the insanity that it entails is over. i think the worst bit was the english history essay, since i managed to write over 12 pages and 3500+ words in 2 hours. i feel like it just went by in a complete blur, especially since i was also working every day in addition to studying and taking finals at 8:00am. the nerd in me loved it though, and it feels a little bittersweet that its over--now i have an entire summer ahead of me with no classes, no homework, and no reading assignments...whatever shall i do with myself? [i'm being a bit dramatic here, not only am i working, i also am going on a few amazing vacations, and self-assigned massive German studying and a book list...to keep myself busy hahah]
yesterday i had my first session of job training for SOAR. i'm really excited to be a tutor, and i'm signing up to tutor all writing and literature classes, plus history and German. i have another training session next friday and one in august and then i can officially start!
today was the English Department's Awards Brunch. i got to take my daddy with me, and we had a really nice time.

it was held in the University Club [which bore a weird resemblance to the Coral Reef restaurant in DisneyWorld!]. i was really surprised to receive one of the Senior Academic Excellence Awards [i just became a senior, since i started university fall 2007] and it was so rewarding to see all my hard work and studying pay off!

[plus it was a reason to get dressed up early on a saturday morning!]
i also wanted to post pictures of the macarons that i ordered for my mama for Mother's Day. they're from Paulette Macarons, which is based in Beverly Hills.

my favorite flavors were rose, pistachio, and mint!

happy summer vacation!!

6.5.10

oh my goodness! finals week already?

In the next week and a half I have:
-World Literature Final [timeline]
-British History final [super long essays!]
-Young Adult Fiction final [essay]
-Political Science final
-my first job training session for my new job--working as a writing skills and German tutor for SOAR. i'm excited, two of my friends, Meg and Kandice, are also working as tutors, and Kandice and I will get to go to training together!
-Department of English Honor Awards :D

it is insane whirlwind, but I have so much goodness in my life...and I know there is even more to come!

I've been singing the songs from this soundtrack all week:

ohhhh i love Audrey Hepburn!

25.4.10

ich bin...

craving donuts.
i may have to make a krispy kreme stop after classes this week!

today was pretty perfect. brunch at my family's favorite little french bistro in grapevine [mm banana and nutella crepes], and then retail therapy. i was able to find some amazing pieces! i've been having great shopping luck lately.
i'm ready for the last two weeks of school before finals. I know that this summer is going to be beyond amazing and I cannot wait.

Spaß Freitag

so yesterday was amazing--busy but totally worth it
:D
since our british history class was canceled, my friend Meg and i had a springtime breakfast...she made the yummiest french toast bake [topped with blackberries!] and a strata. so good! especially with coffee and flowering tea. it was a great way to start the day. i hope she realizes that i'm going to be over at her apartment a lot now, especially if she's going to feed me scrumptious food! [scrumptious is definitely on my 'top words list of the week'...along with 'lovely']
french toast bake :]

i loved the table setting so much!

nom nom nom

afterwards, i went to germany history class [had to practically run across campus to make it on time!] and then met up with my parents at barnes and noble.
i had work at three and then met up with Kandice for dinner...and Pinkberry since she'd never been! Original with strawberries and almonds is my favorite.

i'm surprisingly accepting of the recent changes that have occurred. i know that i don't want negativity in my life, and i've really come to realize that relationships of any kind should make me happy, not cause undue stress.
speaking of someone who makes me happy, here is a picture of my mom with her new ray-bans. i love how she's worn white button-downs for years + red lipstick--so classic! i hope that one day i'll have her innate sense of grace, style, and creativity. fingers crossed that its hard-wired in my DNA!

before i forget, my equally amazing dad went to taiwan and japan and surprised me with presents upon his return home:

green tea and sakura [cherry blossom] flavored Kit-Kats, my favorite japanese fashion magazines, and a longchamp journal. thanks daddy!
time for more germany history studying and writing my political science paper. and maybe some itunes shopping, i'll admit it.

18.4.10

Schönes Wochenende

i had such a lovely girls weekend with my mom the past few days. Leisurely breakfasts with good conversations were definitely the highlight, as well as hanging out in bookstores drinking peppermint tea and eating lemon pound cake. It was so nice to not have to worry about school for a few days [although I admit that I did do a bit of studying] and having the luxury of relaxing and not having to plan ahead...enjoying the moment is so important.

i am in disbelief that i only have three weeks of classes left, and then finals week. this semester has gone by in such a blur and i feel like i've experienced so much in the blink of an eye. the past few months have really proved that when you stay positive and productive that time passes much more rapidly. i am so grateful for my classes this semester, the new friends i've made, and the learning experiences--even though some of them have been a little challenging.
goals for this week:
-bake at LEAST once
-reorganize my closet
-finish making the necklace i've been working on [Halskette machen!]
-finish my German History paper on Das Leben der Anderen--which is an amazingly thought-provoking film that I watched last night about the Stasi in East Germany...incredibly well filmed and multifaceted.
-finish Fitzgerald's Tender Is the Night

Time for bed...and dreaming about Paris...

various realizations & observations

-how much i love penguin classics clothbound books--they're gorgeous and are some of my favorite novels. i found jane eyre today at borders, and now i'm on the lookout for alice's adventures in wonderland and the odyssey...definitely going back into that state of mind of "collect them all!"...which is the result of me being a child of the 1990s.
-that i can wear clothing from the children's section...thus opening up a whole new shopping realm of possibility!
-that my hair looks best when i don't do anything to it--just shampoo, no conditioner, no styling products, and NO flat ironing. who would have thought?
-that i actually love having lots of schoolwork to do. mainly because i'm a nerd and enjoy doing it [for the most part]
-that i really could eat sushi, froyo, cupcakes, and various sandwiches ever single day and NEVER get bored with eating them
-how happy i am every single morning when i wake up...i really am grateful for my life and am blessed every day
-that the only reason i really would want to move out is because i'm out of bookshelf space in my room
-that pretty much my favorite color is robin's egg blue
-and that despite my age, this is still my dream house:

21.3.10

sentimental heart

Oh, oh, old habits die hard
When you got, when you got a sentimental heart
Piece of the puzzle
And you're my missing part
Oh, what can you do with a sentimental heart?
Oh, what can you do with a sentimental heart?

She&Him has been on repeat all of spring break.

Overall the week has been amazing, I was in Las Vegas until Wednesday and had a surprisingly relaxing time--lots of shopping therapy, illy coffee, sushi, and deep conversations with my mom. she really is my best friend, and i'm grateful that we had time away from all of our responsibilities to catch up with each other--we both have such busy schedules and this vacation gave us a chance to just enjoy each other's company. she's the best <3

This week-->BACK TO SCHOOL!:
-German History quiz
-YA fiction midterm
-more library research
-work X2
-new She&Him album comes out on Tuesday
-Tuesday is also, incidentally, Free Pastry Day @ Starbucks!
-lunch dates with homeskillets
-pinkberry opening party!
-fondue with the family
-much needed haircut @ aveda institute
-working on translation annotated bibliography + creative project for YA fiction

+i have my fingers crossed about other things working out. i know that i overthink situations a lot, and that is definitely something i need to work on. but i still have my fingers crossed for things going my way. i know that everything will work out for my highest good, and that [in addition to staying busy] has helped me from obsessing over things i have no control over. only time will tell, you know?

9.3.10

pre-spring break insanity

this week is driving me crazy. i'm trying to be responsible and organized, but there is so much to get done, and if i think about it i feel like i'm going to hyperventilate.

To- Do Lists always make me feel better though:
-study for/take English History midterm
-study for/take World Literature midterm
-young adult fiction reading assignment
-clean room
-translation history research project for World Literature
-work wednesday & friday
-study for/take Political Science midterm
-creative project for Young Adult Fiction

Plus some fun things like:
-hanging out with certain someone [!!!!!!]
-finishing packing for the EPIC SPRING BREAK ADVENTURE
-shopping for TOMS [hopefully plain black ones] and a barnes and noble afternoon complete with a skinny vanilla latte

Goals for This Spring:
-journal more
-make more time for friends [not to say that i'll spend less time on school, but there needs to be a balance]
-exercise regularly [even if this means jumping on the trampoline while watching mtv marathons]
-stay organized-->in school and at home!
-bake at least once a month...learn how to bake macarons!

4.3.10

2.2.10

< two weeks

so i've been horrible at keeping up with my blogging. since christmas my life have been a whirlwind--got a new job at a yoga studio/spa, began a new relationship, and the new semester started [complete with two senior seminar classes!]...however, the new job is already finished, since the location closed and the manager wanted me to skip classes to open the store--never going to happen, mister!
and the relationship is finished as well. having different priorities and schedules really does matter, and i've learned that you shouldn't hold onto something when you know that it isn't the right thing. while i feel a bit disappointed that i filled my winter break with things that did not work out, i know that i've grown from the experience and i wouldn't have it any other way.
i have less than two weeks until my 21st birthday, and i cannot wait, although its going to be a day full of studying, since i have exams the day right after my birthday! plus, i have my LSATs to look forward to on saturday...ah the busy life of an undergrad.
i'm craving pomme frites and red velvet cupcakes sooooo bad...and a milkshake. most definitely. but its back to writing my young adult fiction literary analysis!
i know that 2010 has wondrous blessings in store for me, and i definitely have my fingers crossed about a few things as well.
:D
